Sister Stories - Why I Joined!

June, Member since December 1960.

"My neighbor invited me and I attended my first meeting at 29.  61 years later and sorority means everything to me and I love it."

Lisa, Member since September 2010.

"I lost my mom when I was 8 and although blessed to have the love of sisters and aunts there was always a little something missing. In 2010 my daughter was in her senior year and planning for college, my nest would soon be empty. My friend and client, Cheryl spoke often of sorority. When she invited me I happily agreed and quickly fell in love with the awesome ladies of Epsilon and everything Sigma Phi Gamma stands for.  I am grateful to Cheryl for sharing the gift of Sigma Phi with me and to my fellow sisters for their friendship and love of service."

Colleen, Member since March 2018.

“I honestly never knew anything about service sororities, I didn’t know they existed!  The only sorority I ever knew about were the ones in college.  I learned about SPG through a friend, Mary, who asked me to go with her to Florida to attend a sorority event ( the Omega Province). I agreed, but didn’t really know what I was getting into! I wasn’t really expecting anything, I thought I would just be out of my element and let Mary do her thing. What I found, however, was warmth and a loving environment. I was immediately embraced and treated like I belonged. I felt like I was supposed to be there. It was only a few weeks after we got back, I told Mary I wanted to join up. I met up with my Theta Pi sisters and also found I had personal connections with two of them! To me it felt like it was meant to be! Not only do I have so many new friends, I am also now getting out of the house and doing important work to help others. It fills a need I didn’t know I had inside of me!”

"Three of us were asked to join SPG straight out of high school by my friend’s boyfriend’s mother. She was a long-term, very active gal in SPG and we all knew how much she loved it. Because the three of us were close to this family and realized the love and service she contributed, we were excited to join. Little did we know the friendship, community service and love we would reap. My two best friends have moved on and away from sorority life, but I wouldn’t give it up for anything!  I was initiated in December 1964 and have loved every minute of it!"

Juanita, Member since January 1971.

"My friend and I were invited by Carol, a member.  I loved the ways and means projects and especially remember the baton twirling contests.  I am grateful for  all the fun and the love of my sisters through thick and thin."

Jeanne, Pledge.

"I lost my mom when I was in my thirties and I was an only child.  I love my husband and I am close with my two daughters but they can’t be your only friends.  Lisa doesn’t know the gift she has given me when she invited me.  It means a lot hearing from everyone what sorority means to them."

Judy, Member since January 1973.

"I was literally born into sorority. My birth was announced at a meeting as my mother was a member. She was a member for over 50 years. Sorority is my life. I recall helping to make deliveries as a young girl, wrapping tins full of nuts. I remember meetings at the Spencer Hotel in Marion."
